Celebrating Achievements this Week

It’s been an eventful week at the Biggs-Curran household. Sean was inducted into Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honor society. Only about 15% of engineers get in. It is based on GPA and is quite prestigious. We went kayaking in the morning and celebrated his accomplishment by grilling steaks last night. So proud of him!  He also became a professional engineer this year, as well. He has lots to be proud of.

Last weekend, Marty took PTO to repaint the deck. It came out beautifully and will hopefully last for many years to come! I think it looks fabulous! I only helped a little bit with the project. We also planted our spring garden last weekend. I planted some perennial herbs in the front garden and a few annuals in a deck planter. Marty planted tomatoes, peppers, and squash in the raised beds he built last year. We hope to be able to freeze-dry some of what we are able to harvest this year.

Another exciting thing we started: worm composting.  We already have a traditional composting bin and a Lomi composter. I told Marty the other day that I have always wanted to have a worm composting bin. That very day, he built one out of plastic totes! We got worms from Uncle Jim’s, and this week it got going.  We don’t use pesticides on our garden and do our best to use natural fertilizer. Worm castings will be a great addition to our compost and compost tea that we already use. So excited to add this to our gardening adventures. Worms are fun.

Yesterday we went to a lake we didn’t even know existed. Lake Lucas in Asheboro. It is a quaint little lake with a great ecosystem! We saw a pair of bald eagles, several herons, and a couple of turtles. The geese were really loud in one area of the lake. We paddled 6 miles yesterday in the beautiful 89º weather. Afterward, we ate at the Flying Pig, went to Walker’s shoe store, and ended the trip with a snowball. It was a great day with friends.

I’ve got to head back out to eastern NC again today as we are still rolling out the new client. It’s been going well, but I will be there for the next month working.  We haven’t been able to get any backpacking miles in due to limited time and household chores that need to be done. Still working toward Maine in July, though. Only 78 days until we step on the trail. 🥾
