A Wake up Call

Why I can never get on to write about my adventures is beyond me. If I worked less, maybe I could blog more. It is cathartic. Work is busy and it is good. I often am amazed that *I* landed such an amazing Job with such a great company. *They* truly live by their core values and the Deming style of management. *They* being the corporate culture and all the folks that make up leadership. I am truly blessed to have such a great job.

Once we get these new clients rolled out in NC (I know we will get their business– it takes a lot of work to get there) maybe I will have time. This week, I’ve gotten 38 miles in on my bicycle and walked Ghost almost daily. He loves his evening walks after eating his supper. He is a funny boy!

Last weekend, we went to Brevard, NC to do a little waterfall hunting. We got there Sunday afternoon and decided to go looking for white squirrels. We went to all of the hotspots and still did not find any. We ate at a really cool burger joint called Corky’s Dawg House. It is a dog friendly place to eat.

Marty had been having to go to the bathroom frequently and was thirst all the time. I was going to test his blood sugar the previous week, but we did not get around to it. I honestly thought that it might be a little elevated, but wasn’t too worried. Last weekend, on the way back to our hotel, I told Marty that he should buy a glucose meter and test his blood sugar. It was 460. 4-6-0.

Off to the ER we went. He left after two bags of fluids and a prescription for Metformin. He was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Here we are a week later and he has been on a very restricted carb diet. He sees his physician tomorrow and we are hoping that he can come off the Metformin and kick diabetes to the curb by watching his diet. Luckily, all of his other labs were virtually perfect.

Ghost was such a good boy on his own at the hotel. I didn’t get any phone calls!

I am really proud of Marty– he was drinking 6-9 sodas a day and quit them and caffeine cold turkey. This week I listed to an audio book – “Lies my Doctor Told Me” by Dr. Ken Berry. It is excellent! I am not listening to the “Diabetes Code” by Dr. Jason Fung. If you have insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes, please read these books.

Marty is very physically active and not really overweight or anything. We feel blessed that we seem to have caught this early. Definitely a wake up call for me. While I have tried for many years to watch my carb intake, I love sugar and battle with it. This just solidifies my resolve to go low carb. We’ve done really well this week. Of course, he has lost weight and I have not– AND I was already restricting carbs before this was found. I think this is the man vs woman weight loss battle. I often hear men have an easier time of it.

In other news, I dropped off the dress I wore to my oldest son’s wedding. I am having flutter sleeves put on it, and making it mid calf length instead of floor length. My DIL and I thought this would make the perfect dress for my 4th grand baby’s baptism. I will go to the fitting at the end of September. I just need to find the perfect shoes. Can’t believe next month I’ll be spending a few weeks with my people…. excited about the 4th grand baby.
